People and storytelling images for publications

Editorial photography is storytelling through images. I work with editorial teams to create visually compelling photo series that support the article's message and engage readers.

How editorial photography works

Editorial photography is fast-paced work where planning and flexibility go hand in hand. Every assignment is different, and I adapt to the editorial team's needs.

Receiving the brief — I receive the article topic, angle and initial visual direction from the editorial team. I familiarise myself with the subject and draft a shot plan that supports the article's message.

Advance planning — I assess the location, lighting conditions and logistics. When needed, I contact the interviewee beforehand so the shoot runs naturally and efficiently.

The shoot — I work independently and efficiently. Editorial shoots often come with limited time, and I know how to make the most of it. I shoot a diverse range — wide environmental portraits, tight headshots and natural candid moments — so the editorial team has options for the layout.

Fast delivery — In editorial work, deadlines are tight. I deliver edited images according to the editorial schedule — same day if required.

What types of editorial photography do I produce?

Profile features and interviews — I photograph the interviewee in a way that reveals something essential about the person and their role. In portrait work, I always look for a natural expression and an environment that supports the story.

Reportage photography — I document events, work environments and processes with a journalistic approach. In reportage, the goal is authenticity and capturing the moment without staging.

Customer magazine visuals — I produce visually cohesive image series that follow the publication's style and brand. In customer magazines, quality is particularly important because the images represent the publishing company.

Concept shoots — Sometimes an article calls for a more planned visual approach, where a concept is built around the article's theme. In those cases, I plan the shoot based on a moodboard and concept.

Cover images — The cover is the single most important image in any publication. It determines whether the reader picks up the magazine. I plan cover shoots with particular care so the image works both visually and alongside the typography.

Why hire a professional for editorial photography?

An editorial image is different from a marketing photo. It requires a journalistic eye — the ability to find, in the moment, the one image that tells the story at a glance. An editorial photo must never look staged, yet it needs to be technically flawless and visually arresting.

My experience working with editorial teams means I understand the magazine production process. I know what a layout designer needs: enough variety, different crops and images with room for text. I deliver files in the correct formats and colour profiles for both print and web.

Speed is essential in editorial work. I am accustomed to working under tight deadlines and delivering finished images on a fast turnaround without compromising on quality.

Editorial photographer in Oulu and Northern Finland

I have been shooting editorial assignments for publications and organisations in Oulu and Northern Finland for several years. My images have been published in customer and stakeholder magazines across various industries. I know the northern Finnish conditions and environments, and I know how to use them to create visually compelling image series. I also serve editorial teams elsewhere in Finland.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you use a drone in your shoots?

Yes, when it adds value to the shoot and conditions and permits allow. Aerial images are particularly suited to industrial photography, construction sites, property presentations and events. I hold EASA and Traficom approved drone pilot certificates (A1/A3 and A2) and handle all permit matters on your behalf.

Can photography and video be combined on the same day?

Yes, and I often recommend it. In hybrid shooting, both photos and video are captured on the same day, keeping the visual style consistent while saving you time and costs. This works particularly well for reference, brand and industrial photography.

What file formats do you deliver?

I deliver images in JPEG format, both optimised for web use (sRGB) and as high-resolution files suitable for print (AdobeRGB). Videos are delivered in MP4 format in Full HD or 4K resolution depending on the intended use.

How many photos will I receive?

The number of images depends on the type and scope of the shoot. A personal brand shoot typically produces 5–15 images, staff photography 1–3 images per person, and larger brand or corporate shoots from dozens to hundreds of images. We agree on the specifics during our initial conversation.

How should we prepare for the shoot?

I always provide clear preparation guidelines before the shoot day. For portrait and brand photography, you receive tips on clothing and space preparation. For industrial photography, I review safety requirements in advance. You don't need to worry about the details — I guide the entire process.

Will the photography disrupt work or the event?

No. I always work as unobtrusively as possible. For corporate photography, I plan the schedule so the shoot doesn't disrupt normal operations. At events, I move through the audience unobtrusively. In industrial environments, I photograph on production's terms.

How do I book a shoot?

Get in touch by email, WhatsApp or the contact form. Briefly describe what kind of photography you need and when, and I'll get back to you as soon as possible. The initial consultation and quote are always free of charge.

Is post-production included in the price?

Yes. All my photography services include professional post-production — colour correction, light and shadow adjustments and image finishing. In product photography and brand photography, post-production may be more extensive, such as background replacement or advanced retouching, and this is reflected in the pricing.

How quickly are the photos ready?

Edited images are typically delivered within one week of the shoot. For event photography, a selection of images can be delivered for social media use the same evening. In urgent cases, such as an approaching tender or publication deadline, expedited delivery is possible.

How does pricing work?

Pricing depends on the type of shoot, its scope and the amount of post-production. For example, an individual portrait session at the studio is priced as a package, while larger brand photography and industrial photography projects are priced on a project basis. Request a quote — tell me what you need and I'll put together a clear proposal.

Do you shoot outside Oulu?

Yes. You can book me for shoots anywhere in Finland. For shoots outside Oulu, travel and accommodation costs are added to the price. For product photography, products can also be sent to the studio by post.

What if the weather is bad on the shoot day?

For drone photography and outdoor shoots, we always agree on a backup date in advance. Safety and image quality are never compromised because of weather. Studio sessions and indoor shoots are naturally unaffected by the weather.

Do you shoot at the company's premises or in the studio?

Both options work. Brand, staff and corporate photography are often carried out at the company's own premises, bringing the authentic working environment into the images. Individual portrait sessions and product photography are typically done at my studio in Maikkula, Oulu. We can also combine studio and location photography on the same day.

Do we get full usage rights?

Yes. You receive broad usage rights for your company's marketing and communications use in accordance with the agreed terms.
