How to Choose the Right Photographer for Your Company's Needs?

There are all kinds of photographers out there. If you don't already have a trusted partner for photography, it can be difficult to find the right photographer for, say, your company's brand photography. But don't worry — here are a few tips that can help make the selection process easier. In this example, I'm talking about brand photography, but these tips can also be applied when choosing a photographer for other types of shoots.

1. Define your brand's visual needs

Know your brand: Before you start looking for a photographer, it is important to understand what visual style and feeling your brand needs. What emotions should the images convey and what is the company's visual identity? Does the company already have defined brand guidelines for imagery that need to be taken into account?

Image usage: Think about the contexts in which the images will be used, such as on your website, social media or in print materials.

2. Explore photographers' portfolios

Portfolios: Search for photographers and review their portfolios carefully. A portfolio shows you the photographer's stylistic direction and how broadly they master different types of photography. However, if the portfolio doesn't include the kind of images you are looking for but you might otherwise be interested in working with that photographer, ask whether they have similar work to show. Portfolios contain only a limited number of images, and it may well be that the photographer has experience with the type of shoot you need but the work is simply not publicly displayed for one reason or another.

Specialisation: Check whether the photographer has specific expertise in brand photography and whether they have worked with similar brands or industries. And ask to see images from those projects if they are not on the website.

3. Compare prices and services

Value for money: Compare quotes from different photographers and consider what fits within your budget. A higher price may reflect better quality, the photographer's experience and specialisation in the type of shoot you need, but the price should correspond to the services provided.

What's included: Find out exactly what is included in the photographer's price, such as shooting hours, post-production, how many images you will receive, and whether the package potentially includes more than one shoot day.

4. Meeting and communication

First impression: Arrange a meeting or video call with the photographer. This gives you the opportunity to assess how well you communicate and understand each other.

Vision and understanding: It is important that the photographer understands your brand vision and can visually bring out its strengths. Discuss your wishes and goals for the images openly.

5. Ask for references and read reviews

Recommendations: Ask the photographer for any recommendations and references from previous clients. These provide additional insight into the photographer's working methods and client satisfaction.

Reviews: Search for reviews online, for example on Google Business. Experiences from other clients can help you understand how well the photographer has succeeded in meeting different needs.

6. Test on a small scale

Try out the collaboration: If possible, you can also ask the photographer to do a test shoot. This gives you practical experience of the photographer's working style and the quality of the end result before making a larger commitment.

By following these steps, you can find the right brand photographer for your company — one who understands your needs and can visually strengthen your brand identity.
