One person, many roles – a personal branding session in the studio

I shot a personal branding session at my studio in Oulu with a more interesting starting point than usual: one person, several roles. The client needed a range of clearly different images of himself for different places – a website, social media and professional profiles.

Many of us do more than one thing for a living. In a shoot that's both a challenge and an opportunity. In a single session you can build several visual identities that speak to different audiences but still show the same person. We planned a look of its own for each role: the clothes, the background and the mood.

The first was a clean studio profile. We shot both in a suit and in a more relaxed shirt look, on white and on a softer grey background. The result is a confident portrait that works just as well in a website intro as in a social profile. The eyes and the expression carry it, not the background.

The other two looks took the same person into a completely different environment – with no separate location shoot. I photographed him in the studio and created the backgrounds with AI. The second look settled in around work: a warm, homely workspace with a desk, a monitor and a microphone on its stand. An environmental image like this tells you straight away what someone's everyday work looks like, and gives the brand a personality a plain headshot can't.

The third world was brighter and forward-looking: big windows, plenty of light and plans in the background. That backdrop is AI-made too, but the person and the lighting sit in it seamlessly. The same studio shot turned into a completely different mood from the earlier ones.

This is exactly where AI is strong in personal branding photography. Once the person has been photographed carefully in the studio, you can swap the environment as needed – from a workroom to a bright, glass-walled space – without hauling gear from one place to another. The key is that the light in the photo matches the light in the background, so the result looks real rather than pasted on.

The client ended up with a set of images to use as the situation calls for. A minimalist one-page site needs one strong horizontal image. Social media suits a tighter profile shot. Every role has its own. One shoot, many uses.
