At home below the surface – video and photography for a magazine feature

On a still July morning I had the chance to shoot video and stills for an article in Loimu's magazine about a day in the working life of a marine biologist. The feature, "Meribiologi viihtyy pinnan alla", follows Essi Keskinen and her team as they survey underwater habitats in the Bay of Bothnia off the mouth of the Ii river, documenting biodiversity and carrying out important research for Metsähallitus. I spent a fine, sunny day at sea with the writer Satu Räsänen, following and documenting the work of Essi and her team.

The video and the photographs show Essi and her team preparing for a research dive, navigating the water, and going below the surface to collect samples and record life underwater. The work of a marine biologist asks for physical stamina as much as technical skill.
